Born this Way (with Cupcakes)

So Lady Gaga’s new single is kind of like these cupcakes: they seem fabulous and everyone raves about them, but on second thought they’re actually pretty bland and derivative. In the case of the cupcakes, I say they’re still worth a try. The nice thing about cupcakes is that you can remake them and tweak the recipe, which I highly suggest if you try this one at home. In the case of pop music, once it’s released it’s pretty much set in stone. Which is rather unfortunate given some of the awkward, racialized language that Gaga uses in Born this Way (“No matter black, white or beige / Chola or orient made”). Inspired by a great response over at feministing, I’ve tried to make a little bit more of a statement with this vlogisode. Let me know what you think!

  1. Another fantastic video! I love the timing in this one – turning up the oven dial, laying out the cupcake liners, perfectly timed to the music. And then there’s the karaoke part – you’re so sassy and awesome! I have such a crush on you! And then the meta part. Really nicely done. I like how you handled it, I like that you linked to the feministing post. It’s pretty great to get a dose of food, pop sassiness *and* thoughtfulness all in a single 4 minute video.

Sorry your cupcake recipe turned out to be bland and derivative. Hopefully – like Lady Gaga’s feminist expression – they’ll improve with retrying, patience and feedback.

    • Wow! You totally just made my day : )

Although I wasn’t a fan of these cupcakes, all the people you see eating them at the end seemed to really like them!

  2. This is the most brilliant idea ever! I love it, and you are freakin’ awesome! 😀

Check out for terrific vegan recipes!
